I have a Canon EOS 300D and I am looking to buy a wide angle lens and start putting together virtual tours. I have a budget of around $1000 and I need a lens that will give professional results. I am leaning towards the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, but I have also heard good things about Sigma lenses. Any suggestions, I need all the help I can get!

A lot of people would go for a Fisheye typically the Sigma 8mm f3.5 as this will only require 4 around and a nadir/zenith shot in most cases some examples of images using the 300D here http://ivrpa.org/taxonomy/term/802, details of lenses under the "read more" link.
Other examples from Michel Thorby are here http://michel.thoby.free.fr/How%20to%20macro-fridge.html

do NOT get the 10-22 if you want to make panos. that's too many shots.

if i were you i'd ditch the 300d. get a 350d or 400d used. HUGE difference. and get a samyang 8mm. that will all together cose you less than $1000.

I agree, ditch the 300d, and get a 450d, 500d or 550d and a 8mm fisheye (samyang or peleng seem OK, I have no personal experience with either), depending on your budget. – Joergen Geerds Jul 28 at 14:35

I have a Peleng, and it is capable of giving good results, but the lens coating dates back to an earlier era so there can be quite serious problems with flare and halation. I certainly wouldn't pay the inflated prices that are being asked for it on E-bay. If you can find one second hand for a reasonable price it is a good lens to practice with, and--as I said--it CAN give excellent results. The Samyang is a more modern design, and better in many ways, but has a slightly more restricted field of view despite having nominally the same focal length, and this with the Canon sensor's slightly smaller sensor, is going to leave you with holes at the zenith and nadir. If you have the budget, though, the Sigma 8mm F/3.5 (NOT the earlier F/4.0, which has a different and inferior optical design) is the one to go for. It will not disappoint you.

I use a the Sigma 10mm F2.8 Fisheye on my 40D. Same crop factor as the 300, so it should work great for you as well. The 300D is getting long in the tooth though, so an upgrade is probably a good idea
